For many years now a small group of dedicated Christ Child volunteers have brought their cheery smiles once a month to the boys of Christ Child House.
They visit on the second Tuesday of each month from 3:45 to 5:00 p.m. during the school year. When Heartwarmers first began in 1990, there were both boys and girls in residence at the House. Each month they rotated between crafts and small group games; afterwards they decorated cookies or cupcakes with the children.
Over the years it became difficult to engage the increasingly all-boy group in games or crafts, especially since they arrive home from school at many different times. Now they play bingo each month, an easy game to join in process. They still decorate cupcakes or cookies, an activity every boy can enjoy, no matter his age! This simple program seems to work best for everyone.
From time to time the Heartwarmers bring special visitors to the House. Over the years they have hosted Olympic gold Medalist Sheila Taormina as well as Bob Grimes, the String Man and also, Beth Duman, the Wolf Lady. Occasionally an outing is planned, to the nature center or to play Glow Ball.
At the end of the school year the Heartwarmers host a picnic for the boys with a Moonwalk, cotton candy, burgers and hot dogs on the grill, and their famous taco salad.
